The Afro Chemical and Steel PLC Building is a mixed-use development located in the Bole Atlas district of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. The building comprises of 5 penthouse apartment units, 2 levels of office space & showroom for the Afro Chemical and Steel PLC, and a café at the ground floor.

The building is located in a medium density mixed use residential zone, with close proximity to Peacock Park, which is soon to be part of the riverside project as part of the city’s masterplan. The plot is surrounded from 3 sides by existing houses which will soon be redeveloped.

The design of the building takes inspiration from the client’s business, with finished surfaces and building technology that reflect the company’s focus on innovation and sustainability. The perforated screen that wraps around the building serves as both a shading mechanism and a privacy screen, while also creating a dynamic pattern that adds visual interest.

The 3 levels of café, showroom & office block connect visually through a large opening on the slab with vertical circulation, providing an energetic customer experience. The apartment units overlook an inward veranda facing south east and west, creating their own oasis in this cramped space.

The Afro Chemical and Steel PLC Building is a modern and sustainable development that reflects the client’s business and the city’s masterplan. The building is a testament to the creativity and innovation of the design team, and it is sure to be a landmark in the Bole Atlas district for years to come.
