In 2014, Rahel Shawl was appointed as an Honorary Goodwill Ambassador for Zer Ethiopia, a non-governmental organization (NGO) that advocates for the education of young Ethiopian girls.

Zer Ethiopia is a nonprofit entity that aims to empower economically destitute widowed mothers and their young children, building their capacity to sustain their livelihoods and increase their participation in the country’s development process. The organization has been relentlessly working to facilitate conducive working environments, provide start-up capital, and offer essential life and business skill training to achieve food security for these mothers. As part of its ongoing efforts, Zer Ethiopia has been striving to complete major restoration work to support destitute mothers who cannot afford to send their children to school with lunch boxes and required school material.
