Located in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, the newly revitalized Embassy of the Republic of Namibia stands as a testament to both historical significance and contemporary design. RAAS Architects, alongside a talented team of collaborators, embarked on a challenging yet rewarding journey to restore the building to its former glory while simultaneously infusing it with modern functionality and aesthetics.
Prior to Namibia’s independence, the building held a
pivotal role as the headquarters for the SWAPO Party Liberation Movement.
However, years of wear and tear necessitated its closure and the embassy’s
relocation. Now, through careful restoration and thoughtful design, the embassy
has triumphantly returned to its historical roots.
RAAS Architects masterfully oversaw the transformation,
encompassing structural reinforcement, expansion for additional office space,
and the creation of contemporary, light-filled work environments. Biophilic
design elements, including architectural screens depicting the Namibian dunes
and serene water features, foster a connection with nature and enhance the
well-being of embassy staff and visitors. The lush greenery surrounding the
building further contributes to the welcoming and calming atmosphere. This
successful collaboration between RAAS Architects and their esteemed colleagues
has resulted in a vibrant and functional space that serves as a proud symbol of
Namibia in Ethiopia.
