Rahel Shawl, Founder and Principal of RAAS Architects – blends her industry know-how with her passion for people and identiy, constantly using architecture to bring about posetive impact. A graduate of the Addis Ababa University, Department of Architecture and Urban Planning (now EIABC) and a Loeb Fellow at the Harvard University Graduate School of Design, she has been involved in the design of an impressive body of work, including Residential, Institutional, Hospitality, Health Care and Landscape works. Her wide range of experience results from engaging on collaborative design works with local and international colleagues, partners and clients. Rahel seeks to use architecture to become a meaningful design and construction outcome for the end user while also having a positive impact on the environment – bringing to life an architecture that is human centered and genuine. With decades of experience to pull from, she remains consistent, resilient and ethical as she looks to the environment – both natural and built – for inspiration to continue being adventurous with innovative ideas. She is exceptionally skilled at leading teams and believes as a leader, success is pulling out inherent talents yet to be uncovered. Driven by the need to always be present in all that she does she dedicates her time engaging with young people to promote and share knowledge of architecture; and passionately engaging in the advocacy for equity in design practices.
Joined the practice in 2013; inspired by human interaction in different situations and particularly in the cities, he practices architecture in the hopes to bring a positive change to the built environment and is passionate about the multiple ways of discovering and creating. Aspiring to play a key role in building the future of cities, he finds architecture thrilling in its ability to deal with different scales – from small furniture in a room to mega cities, and wishes to elevate these relations in a harmonized way to secure the wellbeing of its habitats. Peter sees every project as a chance to expand his understanding of how architecture changes who we are and how we choose to live. He ensures he is continuously evolving as a professional by constantly seeking knowledge and adapting to the changes in the society and the industry.
Joined the practice in 2013; Architecture Graduate, completed his studies from Adama Science and Technology University in 2020/21 calander year. Following graduation, Kirubel Decided to pursue a career in Architecture and Joined RAAS in 2021.Currently, Kirubel holds the position of junior Architect and is responsible for assisting the lead Architect on a Project. Outside of work, Kirubel is passionate about Music and Literature.
Joined the practice in its early days in 2006; an individual who deeply values truthfulness and is passionate about her religion and beliefs, she aspires to be a great leader. What moves Wubet as a human is honesty, as an employee it is a peaceful work relationship and as a member of a society at large it is helping others. A hard worker who holds responsibility and sincerity at high regards, Wubet identifies leadership to mean helping others to make them successful, understanding everyone to work together seamlessly and concentrating energies and expertise on solutions and not on problems. Her collaborative and caring nature not to mention her sharp attention to detail at every stage, compliments her professional existence and her relations with the team and clients at large.

Joined the practice in 2018; an active, reliable, daydreamer of a creative being, Bemnet attempts to understand and change his environment one line at a time. Passionate about everything creative, human interactions and exploring nature he aspires to become the best version of himself and seeks to use those set of skills to create spaces that allow for natural beings to thrive. He always reminds himself there is more to learn and there is ample room for improvement and is often searching for new ways of doing things while creating opportunities for others to learn from . Habitually looking for inspiration in other forms of creative expressions, the society he lives in and books, he pursues architecture because of the opportunity to merge artistic vision with practical problem solving. He finds the biggest thrill in architecture to be – understanding the magnitude of change that his designs could achieve on its surrounding and users.
Joined the practice in 2012; she decided to pursue a career in architecture because it has the depth in potential to address environmental and societal matters. Moved by humanity itself, she believes in the spirit of giving something back and paying it forward to make a difference. Melat is a person who sees the good in bad situations and aspires to feel like a kid again to freely entertain transformative abstract ideas she can then make reality. She finds it thrilling that although architecture is part art, the act of feeling and being responsible with what she does to a physical world makes it more substantial because it affects way of life and people’s feeling. As a leader in her field she ensures her continuous growth through her love for teamwork and knowing everyone matters with each one housing different expertise. Outside of architecture, she is passionate about plating and Jewelry design and looks for inspiration in movies, music and sometimes in silence.
Joined the practice in 2012; an architect – a builder, Moges wishes to see better housing and infrastructure throughout the country and quality building construction in urban areas. Passionate about architectural details in design and construction, he aspires to incorporate traditional design and indigenous knowledge of construction with the modern system, in a cost effective way, to serve the rural society. The biggest thrill he finds in architecture is that a well-designed space can make a difference on the standard of living and way of thinking of an individual and a collective. Self-describing his work ethic and values as beautiful, useable and workable, he enjoys integrating design and human comfort into functional spaces. For Moges leadership is most rewarding when a space allows for sharing the knowledge one has, whilelistening and encouraging people to explore their experiences and abilities while respecting the work discipline.
Joined the practice in 2016; an architect and a fashion designer, she is passionate about finding and learning new ideas and aspires to harness the possibilities in architecture to shift to effective problem solving and play a big role in cities. She finds delight in architecture and its ability to act as an agent for problem solving and its omnipresence. She most enjoys working in architecture because it is constantly helping communities to interact with each other to acknowledge opportunity from corner to corner. Every project brings with it a set of its own totally different problems and features nothing that is routine, Betelhem’s adaptability, teamwork and inclination for discovery are invaluable qualities that allow her to provide solutions and bring satisfaction by elevating the process as a whole. To ensure she continues to grow and develop as a leader in her field, she focuses on the creative and methodical part of the business to constantly be up-to-date with advancements and gets her inspiration walking around and through a variety of places.
Joined the practice in 2014; placing responsibility, integrity and professionalism as his top values, he works to inspire others by dedicating time to continuous learning and updating his skill sets. Currently studying architecture and urban planning as a 5th year student, he believes leadership is about influencing people by what you say and do; his commitment to ensuring continued growth as a leader shows itself through his actions of developing situational awareness by becoming a discrning listener who is open minded and flexible to take on complex problems that require graceful and distinctive solutions. Aspiring to become well equipped goes beyond his profession and into the love he has for his country and the various paths that can be built towards peace through his passion for architecture.
Joined in 2015; self-identifying as ‘a reflection of his time and scene’, he is passionate about architecture for society. The biggest thrill he finds in architecture is how it affects a society, its inhabitants and the fourth dimensional aspect of architecture that conveys the passing of time. As a leader in his field he ensures to continue growing through collaboration and contribution; a responsible, adaptable and convivial early bird, he identifies leadership to mean knowing how best to get things done. Yonas considers architecture as a life style and enjoys the reality that there is no particular “where” to get inspired, for everything around him serves as a space of insight which can be harnessed to improve the quality of life in communities and by extension nations at large – one simply has to sensitively perceive the environment and surrounding to distinguish how it all connects. He aspires to helm a research center that can fill the gap between the local knowledge, vernacular varchitecture and present architecture.
Joined the practice in 2020; Seid is looking to enhance design abilities while contributing to the advancement of architectural researches from different perspectives. He is passionate about art & design in its every form and his curiosity to constantly be on the lookout for inspiration translates to inventive solutions in design challenges as he seeks to create efficient, innovative and functional design and possibly add value to society in the process. He identifies leadership to mean having the ability and quality to communicate an idea and work towards it as a team. A persistent, motivated and dependable professional, he ensures to continue growing as a leader by trying out new experiences and drawing enthusiasm from that adventure
Completed his studies in 2020 and graduated with a degree in Architecture in his hometown, Gondar University. Following graduation Abrham decided to pursue a career in architecture and joined the team at RAAS in 2021. Abrham holds the position of Graduate Architect within the firm, and is responsible for designing and drafting technical drawings for on-going projects . Outside of work Abrham is passionate about Literature and theatrical arts.
