RED DOOR is an apartment building constructed on a 750m2 plot of land in a dense residential neighborhood in Addis Ababa comprising of 13 Apartments units of 1,2 and 3 Bedroom types including a roof top terrace to be used as an event space. The use of interlocking boxes where intruding/extruding forms define the floors and the spaces within creates a playful façade while also giving a unique quality of internal/external spaces within the apartment.

RIBA Publishing has released a new book titled “100 Women in Practice”, which celebrates the work of female architects from all over the world. The book features a list of 100 architects, including Ethiopian architect Rahel Shawl, who has been recognized for her outstanding contribution to the field of architecture.
In this special issue, Ketema traveled 500 kilometers across the country zooming out of the bustling metropolitan city to a sereneand picturesque site nestled within the hillsand mountains of Dawro zone.
In this issue, Ketema once again puts the spotlight on a building that linked the heritage of 4kilo ”Ambassador Mall” with modern times by carefully fusing history, context and sustainability. Designed by the eclectic practice of Rahel Shawl, the building breathes an air of modernity while resonating the characters of the 60s and 70s architecture.
In this issue, Ketema featured project is about a recently completed piece of contemporary Architecture that successfully fused elements of such style with place, simplicity, elegance and lightness. The bold colors of the façade complemented by the calm grey counterpart gave it a striking appearance in the densely populated neighborhood.

an incomplete archive of women+ in architecture her+ perspective is a public participation project that focuses on tackling gender inequality in the building industry.
Initiated in 2019, it began as an exhibition that sought to acknowledge the positive contributions of women+ to the architectural profession, with an emphasis on the Global South. An ‘incomplete’ timeline of notable women+ was generated through submissions from the local community in Cape Town.
One of the featured women in the book is Rahel Shawl, who is a true role model for young women everywhere. The book is a celebration of the incredible achievements of Ethiopian women and an inspiration to all those who seek to break through barriers and achieve their goals.
